Instagram is your portfolio, not a free front desk: how to stop saying “DM me” and start taking bookings
Instagram is meant to be your best shop window, not a full-time job at a free front desk. See how to set up your link in bio, the “Book now” button and your stories so that likes turn into real appointments.

“DM me” – this short phrase was supposed to build relationships, but in practice it has become the biggest thief of time in Polish salons. Instead of creating beautiful transformations or resting after an intense day, you end up on the sofa in the evening with your phone in your hand. That is when you run endless negotiations about a free Saturday, explain the price difference between classic and volume lashes, and pray that the client will finally make up her mind. Your Instagram feed looks like a million dollars, but your inbox looks like one big mess that is hard to keep under control.
The problem is not the app itself, but a process that got stuck in a previous era. Instagram should be your best shop window and a machine for attracting new people, not a full-time job at a free front desk. You can keep hammering out every single appointment by hand in your messages, losing half of the interested people along the way, or you can set up – once and properly – an automated system that turns likes into real slots in your calendar.
Why arranging appointments in direct messages simply does not work
Even if you run a small, intimate studio, bookings through DMs quickly become a ball and chain. The worst part is the conversion that keeps slipping away. The longer the “working it out” and the back-and-forth questions take, the more often the client puts the decision off until later. In the beauty industry decisions are often made on impulse – someone sees your beautiful work and wants the same for herself. If she does not get a simple booking button at that very moment, your enthusiasm (and her money) will evaporate by the third exchange of messages.
The truth is that in 2026 most people simply want to see your calendar, pick a time that suits them and get it off their plate without any unnecessary conversation.

Your new plan for Instagram: no more chaos
If you want to cut down the avalanche of questions about free slots, you need to create one main booking route. Every path on your profile should lead to your online schedule.
1. The “Book now” button
This is by far the shortest path. Professional Instagram accounts let you add so-called action buttons. If your booking system supports it, hook the “Book now” feature up directly beneath your profile description. The client taps, picks a service and it is done. If your profile does not have that option yet – no worries. A solid, well-labelled link in your bio will do the job just as well.
2. A link in your bio that says “click me”
Instagram currently lets you add up to 5 links in your bio. Use that, but keep it tidy. The first link has to be the most important one. Name it clearly: “Book your appointment here” or “Free slots – check them out”. Avoid generic phrases such as “Website” or “Contact”, because the client does not want to search – she wants to book. Below it you can add a price list or a map, but booking must always be right at the very top.
3. Stories that sell appointments
This is where the real “right now” business happens. If a slot has just opened up, do not make people message you. Post a photo, add a link sticker leading straight to a specific day in your calendar and write: “Today 17:00 – the perfect moment for your new lashes!”. Also create a permanent Highlight called “Booking”, where you show in a few steps how easy it is to make an appointment with you.
A pinned post as your round-the-clock front desk
Pin one post at the top of your profile that explains once and for all how booking works at your place. A post like that saves a huge amount of time and questions. What should it include?
- A short list of the services you specialise in.
- Information that you take bookings exclusively through the link in your bio.
- A mention that the system sends SMS reminders on its own.
- At the end add: “If you need an emergency appointment – message me, we will try to help”.
That small side door for regular clients is important, but you will see that the vast majority of people will happily use self-service booking.
“Soft automation”, or a ready-made reply for every message
You do not have to be a technology expert to make your life easier. In your Instagram settings, prepare one “saved reply”. As soon as a “when are you free?” question comes in, one tap sends a ready-made template:
“Hi! Lovely to hear from you. You will find all the free slots and the full price list here: [Your Link]. You can grab a time for yourself right away. See you soon!”
That is enough to stop running fifteen conversations at once and to direct the traffic to where the magic happens – straight to your schedule.
The most common mistakes that ruin the effect
Many salon owners unknowingly throw obstacles in their clients’ way. The biggest sin is a link in the bio that leads to a homepage where you have to hunt for the booking button all over again. Another thing is urging people in your stories to “DM me” when you already have an online system – that teaches clients bad habits. Remember to test on a smartphone too. If your booking page takes ages to load or is unreadable on a small screen, the client will simply run off to the competition.
A quick rollout plan (it will take you about half an hour):
- Set up the booking page in your system.
- Put the link as the first item in your Instagram bio.
- Try to add the “Book now” button in the contact options.
- Create a Highlight with simple booking instructions.
- Pin an information post at the very top of your gallery.
After these few steps you will feel an enormous relief. Your phone will vibrate less often while you work, and you will get your evenings back.
