The area is shaved beforehand, and before the first appointment the salon asks about medication, recent sun exposure and earlier treatments.

Salons usually plan several sessions a few weeks apart, and the number and spacing are set by the salon once it has seen the area — they depend on the area, the hair and how your skin responds. Ask about the plan before the first session.
The area is normally shaved the day before, and hair is not removed from the root (waxing, tweezing) in the weeks leading up to the course. The salon will also advise on sun exposure, medication and cosmetics — suitability is decided by whoever performs the treatment.
